Your Beat, My Lyrics

Your Beat, My Lyrics

Last Sunday, there was a Christian artist that was invited to come and perform (minister) at the youth concert that was happening. I initially was really excited about the service but as soon as the artist dropped his first beat I just could not allow myself to get into it. The first song he sang was Macklemore’s, ”Cant Hold Us Now.” He used the same chorus but changed the verses to his own  lyrics and everyone around me was straight jammin’. The thing is, I wasn’t thinking about his adapted “holier than...

Fitness & Health: Losing Weight Is Bittersweet

Me and my best friend, Shel, decided to have a Skype date yesterday night. During the stress of exams and school, it’s always good to take a break and just have some laughs with your friends. Somehow, some way, we got on the subject of my weight loss. I sent her a text earlier in the week to inform her that I was 37 pounds down, and she was following up on it. “So, are you proud of yourself?” she asked. I hesitated, really thinking about my answer. “Yeah, I am. It’s just that these last few weeks, I haven’t...

SATM: Steph & The Akward First Date Part 2

At 2:15pm, I get a call from him: Him: Where are you? Me, irritated and fuming, darn near foaming at the mouth: Starbucks. Where are you? Him: I’m at Barnes and Noble. There’s a Starbucks in there. I blinked at my phone a couple times before saying back to him:  I thought we were meeting at Starbucks in Town Center. Him: Oh, well, I’m not familiar with this area, so I thought you meant the one in Barnes and Noble. Plus, I parked at the movie theater and walked over here. Which means I had to drive to him. After connecting...

Single…And Awkwardly Trying To Mingle: The Awkward Part

I have been single for as long as I can remember. Being single is a blessing, a curse, an unwanted title, a coveted position, you name it, I have felt it. But one thing that I find to be completely unavoidable is how awkward I can get when someone I’m attracted to is involved. I’ll give you a few examples that have actually occurred to me in the last 24 hours: First Situation: I arrive at the gas station, as good car owners do to prevent being stopped on the road, and in the pump right across from mine, there is a really cute,...

SATM: Steph & The Awkward First Date

So, I went out on a date last week. That’s right, my first official date at 22 years old. So, I think it’s safe to say that years and years of expectations, childhood fantasies and chick flicks contributed to the extremely high expectations that was placed on my poor friend’s head. Not to mention the fact that I told myself that this date was make or break for me and the guy I’m talking to. We’ll call him Malik. I met Malik back in January on OKC, right after the psycho and I stopped talking, and he was a breath...

SATM: Awkward Steph & The Class Cutie

There’s this really cute guy in my Music Appreciation class. He’s tall, caramel-skinned, very smart ( at least from what I hear him say in the class), and I’ve caught him staring at me a couple times over the semester. Let’s call him John, because I have no clue what his real name is. The closest I’ve gotten to a real conversation with this guy before yesterday was a weird and awkward pause at the door on the way out of class. We both stopped to let the other go first and I ended up smiling clumsily and walking...

Being Christian In Australia

Being Christian In Australia

So sorry I haven’t written in a while everyone! One thing that is worth telling is I finally visited a church that really uplifted my spirits. Since I have been in Aussie, I haven’t really come across a lot of Christians or people interested in any religion for that matter. It was a little discouraging  because I still need to feed my spirit regardless of where I reside in the world. Anyway, I was introduced to some people at an activities mart a few weeks ago and they told me I should check out a place called “Planet...

Fitness & Health: 27lbs Down!

Howdy, yall! I come bearing wonderful news: I have lost 27lbs since January and 41lbs since my highest ever in the spring of 2011. I am almost at my goal for March, which is to lose a total of 10lbs for the month. And that would leave me at 30lbs lost in three months, which is what I anticipated when I started this lifestyle change on January 1st. Honestly, I am super, duper shocked that this has happened. I have completely done a 180. I don’t even recognize this confident, determined, disciplined girl that stares back at me when I look...

Suits & Ties vs. Hats and Tats

Sydney and the Great Ocean Road trip:  The past two weekends have been one for the books. Last weekend I was extremely fortunate to visit Sydney, Australia for the first time and let me tell you…it was an experience. Let me break it down. We stayed in a hostile, we took an 11 hour bus ride there and we ate McDonalds (Mackers) like every chance we got lol. The first day the weather was pretty crappy but we were in Sydney so I mean…I got over it. We saw the Botanic Gardens, the Harbour Bridge, The Opera House and everything in...

“You’re the first Black person I….”

Posted by on Feb 26, 2013 in College & Career, The Land Down Under | 3 comments

“You’re the first Black person I….”

…have ever been friends with” is how the rest of that sentence goes. Two different people have told me that in the past 4 days. It’s been interesting to hear. It’s almost an honor and a disappointment at the same time. My thoughts: “I’m really the only black person you have ever come in contact with??” I’m not even black people! FULL NIGERIAN HERE. One guy and I were talking about future goals and aspirations and I mentioned to him that I would live in Australia my whole life if I had the chance...
